Old and Breaking Out of My Shell

The photography club I belong to has a monthly theme where members are invited to bring a photo taken in the last month representative of the preannounced theme.  If you wish to participate you bring an 8 by 10 to the meeting, place it face down on a table where it's assigned a number.  After the meeting everyone in attendance, including visitors, is given the opportunity to vote on their favorite three choices.  I've never before entered, sometimes because I think my photo just isn't good enough, but more times than not because I haven't taken a photo which would qualify during the month period.  I am a caretaker for my 90-year-old mother, live in a fairly isolated spot, and work from home, so frequently I don't get out and about to take a lot of photos.  My excursions are generally taking mom to her many doctors' appointments, taking her to get her hair done, taking her to church on Sunday, and all other times when I venture out it's going to town (a 45-minute drive) for groceries and other errands.  About once every three months I have a day where I can go exploring and really concentrate on my picture-taking.

The theme for this month's meeting was "Old" so I figured right away I'd be able to easily find a good subject since almost everything in this area is old!  One of my favorite old buildings is the dilapidated Fox Theater in the little town of Timpson about 10 miles up the road so I zipped over there one day and shot a few pics.  So tonight before the meeting I picked up my 8 by 10 photo at Walgreen's, almost didn't enter it because it looked a bit darker than what I expected, but decided, oh, what the heck, if it didn't win nobody would know it was mine anyway (or care, for that matter).  I actually managed to take third place in the voting, so then I'm all hyped and can't wait to hear what next month's theme is.  You guessed it!  It's "New."  That's not nearly as easy as "Old."  Oh, sure, a new baby, a little duckling, yada, yada, yada.  If you have any great ideas let me know.  I'm going on a road trip in a few days but I wasn't expecting to look for "new" stuff while I'm gone!

This is a great shot, Kathy. I love the old theaters and wish more of them were being used.

Congrats on 3rd place! That's awesome. About "new," how about a flower bud? Or an opening flower? Just a thought. xo

What a thrill to win! Congratulations; sometimes we are too modest about our skills...and how wonderful to belong to a photography club. Since you appear to be so isolated I'm surprised that a camera club flourishes there. It must be a wonderful outlet and diversion for your many concerns!

i love the theater and the photo of it. and it had to be good to win 3rd place. i like the idea of no one knows who took the photos. do you tell them it's yours win it wins? i am no help on the NEW, that is why i don't take part in the weekly meme's that have a subject. when i go looking for a certain thing my mind goes blank, and that is why i have hesitated to joing a club. it is like my mind shuts down when someone says go find This... you did great with yours.

Congratulations! This is a great photo and a great "old" example. If there is a carnival/state fair nearby you, you should consider entering contests they might have. You go girl!

Very nice picture! Congratulations! New doesn't mean young... A sunrise, a new hair do, unopened box of cereal, newly polished fingernails. And share your pictures! Go for it...!!!

When I read that you didn't think your pictures were good enough to win the contest, it made me laugh. I have always been envious of your photo talent and thought your pictures were some of the best. Keep entering your shots, you will see.
When I saw the theme "new", a sunrise popped into my mind. A new day, with all it's possibilities.

I like my sister's idea for "new". This club sounds a lot like the one I belong to only mine is not just photography. We have "real" artists in my group so it can sometimes be very intimidating when I show up with another photograph and they have paintings, carvings, sculptures and all kinds of creative things.
This photo is just great. Congratulations on the win, you deserve it. You have some fantastic photos on your blogs. Keep up the good work....and enter some more photos!

Remeber that song that starts:

When everything old is new again!

One of those old courthouse photos where the building has been refurbished might work!

I greatly admire your photos and am happy to see you competing.

Best wishes,

Jo

Since you live in chicken farming country - something around a new baby chicken, hatching? I think there is a hatchery Timpson; it would keep you close to home. Love your photos - glad to hear you were voted into top 3 - I would be excited too!

Well deserved! Congrats on taking 3rd. How about a sunrise or a new bud opening? The club sounds like so much fun. I'd love that!
