Franklin County Courthouse - No. 18

The Franklin County Courthouse in Mount Vernon, Texas, is currently undergoing restoration.  Built in 1912 in the Classical Revival style, the building has a chiming clock.  It appears that the dome was refinished first since earlier photographs maintained by the Texas Historical Society show the dome to be of a silver metal. It now appears to be copper.  It was obvious when I visited that the interior is also undergoing massive reconstruction because I could see through the front doors and the entire inside has been gutted.  Although it is over 150 miles away (thereby necessitating a 300-mile round trip) perhaps in the coming months I can take a return trip to see the finished product.

I have finally finished posting all the courthouse pictures I've taken to date and included them under the Courthouses category on the right-hand sidebar.  If  you're ever interested in seeing the others, just click on the Courthouses tag.  Of Texas' 254 counties, I have a goal to photograph approximately 78 of the ones I considered most beautiful.  Only 60 more to go!

Lovely building and a great history lesson as well.

I just happen to live in another Franklin County. Only, in Missouri.

I like the big pillars and dome on this one. It is nice to see it being restored and not left to deteriorate.

That is a pretty aggressive goal you've set for yourself but, I'm certainly enjoying the results. This one is great and will be even better once they complete the work. I love the copper on the dome.

It does look like it would warrant a return trip.
