Caption This - Week 4

This coach has a very serious thought here.  What do you think the text in the speech bubble should read?

Last week's top captions go to:

1.  Whose idea was it to do this Polar Bear plunge?  If I end up with pneumonia, I'll know who to blame.
Sharon at Phoenix Daily Photo

2.  Hey Myrtle.  Throw me a towel.

3.  Myrtle!  Are you doing a load of laundry?  I ran out of hot water AGAIN!

All Things Incredible

Emerson is utterly fascinated with all things having to do with The Incredible Hulk. Several months ago he decided that he wanted a Hulk costume for Halloween. His mom found one (and that was it, ONE!) at a party store today and he shows up at my place for an over-nighter musclebound, with a six-pack, and roaring green, announcing that he is there to keep me safe. After a dinner of pizza and wings at Streets of New York, we returned home where he was allowed to watch an episode of that famous Bill Bixby/Lou Ferrigno classic on the instant play version of Netflix. At one point he came running into my room, gave me a kiss and said, "Gramma, I really can't keep you safe because I'm really not the Incredible Hulk." Alhough he is pretty adamant about the fact that in real life Dr. David Banner (Bill Bixby's character in case you've forgotten) is his barber!

Today's news: A UPS employee in Florida -- aptly named Brandon Loser -- was arrested and charged with stealing $53,000 worth of designer sunglasses he was supposed to deliver. Loser, 21, of Daytona Beach, admitted stealing 212 pairs of Costa Del Mar sunglasses, which go for $250 each.

09-09-09 - A Magical Day

It may be a magical day but homework still prevails. Emerson comes every Wednesday night for dinner and his homework assignment. Tonight the task was to find several household objects of which one could count at least 20. He had paperclips, rubberbands, Uno cards, and pennies (not shown). He actually (which, actually, "actually" is his favorite new word) managed to count up to 39 of most everything!

Today's news: Obama speaks to joint session of Senate and House re: health care reform. Joe Wilson lashes out.
Today in History: 1947– First actual case of a computer bug being found: a moth lodges in a relay of a Harvard Mark II computer at Harvard University.

Circles, Circles, Circles

Emerson is now in kindergarten and has daily homework assignments. Tonight while his mom went to an appointment it was left up to us to find household items that represented circles. These are the things we accumulated in about 10 minutes. See if you can find: strainer, jar of olives, hair gel, French fried onions, salt, tube of Blixtex, Palmer's cocoa butter, Granny Smith apple with a circle scan sticker, coffee filters, marinated artichokes, toilet paper, lime, cottage cheese, hot dogs, two bowls, plate, salad plate, cannister of pasta, furniture polish, organic butter lettuce, can of tomatoes, fudge sauce, Comet, antiseptic wipes, Chinese mustard, horseradish, Pantene mousse, hairspray, three spices, gala apple, salt, two pan lids, plastic containers and lids, jalapeno peppers, whoopee cushion, funnel, shampoo, can of Coke, Apricot preserves, Bartenders' helper, and probably about 20 other items that are indistinguishable! It was a fun project! And plus, we put them all on a round table -- which is a circle!

Home Again

Emerson and his mom met me at the airport and he was sporting a big gap in his mouth! This was his first tooth to lose and he was still very excited about the visit he got from the Tooth Fairy!

Guest Chef

Squish It Between Your Fingers

Kids just love to get their hands in .... anything! So I invited Emerson be the guest chef for breakfast this morning and mix up our turkey sausage. It's a great heart-healthy way to enjoy sausage. Here's the recipe:
Wash hands thoroughly (especially if you're five!)
2 lbs. ground turkey
3/4 tsp. ground ginger
1 1/2 tsp. salt
1 tsp. dried sage
1/4 tsp. cayenne pepper
1 1/2 tsp. ground black pepper
Squish it all up, form into patties, fry in a skillet with nonstick cooking spray!

Cracking Eggs

Breakfast of Champions
Emerson had a sleep-over at Gramma's house last night and one of his favorite things to do is help in the kitchen. He is especially good at cracking the eggs for breakfast. It's important that I utilize him as much as possible because on the days he's not here, I'm searching for the photo-of-the-day idea!

Cool Water Droplets

When it’s 115 in the desert , an air-conditioning condensation pipe is a good thing to find. Emerson and I went up to the church to look for photo ops. He found the dripping pipe and I found the photo op (Notice the pipe at the very top of the picture and the wet spots on his shirt). I will be welcoming Em’s visits during this project. With a 5-year-old boy, photo ops are always nearby! I have a feeling a lot of pictures will be taken at the church. It is a block from my house and was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, although not built until after his death. It is the most outstanding landmark in the neighborhood and is quite dramatic from many angles. I will, from here on out, simply refer to it as “the church.”
