this is not molting, we have parrots in our jungle gardens and when i said that to the keeper, she said it is from anxiety attacks and they pull their feathers out. they don't molt. parrots live up to 75 years and they get very attached to the owners and when they are separated from the people they do this, and they do suffer from anxiety disorders like we do. these poor guys should have been left in their jungles and i often wonder if they pluck their feathers when left in the wild.
I tend to agree with Sandra. Parrots are very sensitive creatures. When I was working at the animal hospital, we would see parrots like this one come in. I hope he feels better soon.
Gee, at least when I look all disheveled when I get out of bed I can brush my hair! This poor guy! How long does this last? I'm sure he's not ready for mating season while looking like this. ;)
Several years ago we got an abused parrot, but it was difficult to revive his spirit. A young vet student at the U of Mn took him off our hands and worked wonders with the bird. The one you photographed needs TLC...bi time.
I am a retired court reporter now working part time as a proofreader. In December 2010 I returned to my roots in Deep East Texas to care for my aging mother after having lived in Arizona for over 30 years. I live on a farm in Nacogdoches County near the Louisiana border. This blog is a repository for pictures of subjects that I find interesting in my travels up and down the country roads throughout the Piney Woods. I love to take pictures of farm animals and equipment, old houses, barns and sheds and anything that has vines or rust on it.

Such a sad story! Is there a parrot shrink anywhere near to help him/her out?
