"The Gateway" is the title of a sculpture which sits in the plaza in the center of Nacogdoches as a tribute to the pioneering families who traveled west in the early 1800s on the El Camino Real de los Tejas to settle Texas. The figures are life-sized and the sculpture is one of several sponsored by the Friends of Historic Nacogdoches, several of which have previously depicted on this blog and more are in the planning stages. The historic trail ran from the capitol and central viceroyalty of New Spain in the present day Mexico City, winding through Saltillo, Monterrey, present day Laredo, San Antonio and Nacogdoches before ending in what is now known as Nachitoches, Louisiana. The trail was first followed and marked by Spanish explorers and missionaries in the 1700s and was one of several "El Camino Reals, or "royal roads," that connected the Spanish possessions in North America with Mexico City.

The sculpture is wonderful as a photo but I imagine even more impressive in person. It's taking me back to the books I loved to read as a child about the early pioneers that settled the West.
beautiful sculpture and when i see these type things, i think about how hard their lives were and that i am glad i live now.. i am a wimp, just ask my hubby
I like this sculpture. And your picture is beautiful with the colorful leafy background.
That really is a great statue. I love the movement in it. It does a good job of conveying that pioneer spirit.
Excellent use of background to highlight the foreground. Lovely!

Wonderful sculptures against a beautiful background colour!
Happy New Year, Kathy.
neat bit of history and really cool statue set!
The leaves made for a nice backdrop.
How beautiful! The fall foliage adds so much to the shot.
