Road Trip ~ Lufkin, Texas
A couple of weeks ago found me on the road again in search of history and fun photo opportunities in East Texas. Trusty Truck carried me about 40 miles south to Lufkin. Although only 18 miles from Nacogdoches, Lufkin was not founded until 1882, while the Spaniards established a mission in Nacogdoches in 1716 and ancient Caddo Indians lived in what is now Nacogdoches some 10,000 years ago. Lufkin is the county seat of Angelina County and is filled with many beautiful turn-of-the-century Victorian homes. Its downtown area is rich with murals detailing its history. It is the home of Lufkin Industries, manufacturer of highway trailers. I know you've seen the mud flaps on the backs of trailers as you've traveled down interstate highways that say Lufkin. So now you know where they come from! One of Lufkin's most notable citizens was Charlie Wilson, the former U.S Representative best known for leading the CIA into a covert war in Afghanistan, the story of which formed the basis of the movie Charlie Wilson's War.
I fell in love with the sign for this little cookie shop. Who wouldn't want to drop in and have a cookie at this place! Unfortunately, it was Sunday and they were closed, so no kookie for Kathy.
I got several great pics in Lufkin so I'll be sending them your way periodically.
Thanks for stopping by. I enjoyed our visit!

Good thing I don't live there. I would always find myself calling that emergency number!
Sweet picture and prolly sweet cookies.
More wall art! And that is too funny - a cookie emergency hotline! Love it
Okay, now I'm craving a chocolate chip cookie! Interesting information about Charlie Wilson. I enjoyed that movie about him very much. I can't wait to see more photos from here.
Bummer! I would definitely go back though, I bet they have some great stuff!
Great idea for that hotline!!!:)
Hold on a second, I'm getting that number put in my speed dial....there. :) What a fun sign. Glad you're spending time on the road with your camera.
Cute sign. Yes, I HAVE seen the Lufkin flaps. Lufkin, Texas, eh?
Well, duh, did you call the "cookie emergency" number? LOL. TOO CUTE! Looking forward to more pics. It sounds like an interesting place.
Cool sign and rich colors!
