Downes-Aldrich House ~ Crockett, Texas
The Downes-Aldrich House in Crockett, Texas, is an outstanding example of Eastlake Victorian architecture. Construction was started by James Elbert Downes, a prominent local business and civic leader in Crockett, about 1891 and was completed in 1893. Downes was a native of the area and the son of Texas pioneers. He served in the Civil War and in later years devoted much of his time to the Methodist Church. He imported much of the material for the home’s construction from other states.
In 1911 he sold the house to Armistead Albert Aldrich (don’t you love that name!), a distinguished civic leader and historian. Another Crockett native, Aldrich was educated at the University of Virginia and served as a county judge, a state representative, and a presidential elector. He resided in the house until his death in 1945. The Aldrich family still occupies this beautiful home.
This information comes from three Texas historical markers: the grave site of James Elbert Downes, the grave site of Armistead Albert Aldrich, and a marker in front o f the house, which is listed as a Texas historic landmark and on the National Register of Historic Places.

There is a lot going on with this one. So much gingerbread! I love the balconies and upper porches. How nice that the family still lives there.
I'm off to the lake til Wednesday. I'll talk to you then. :)
Wow that is a big house. I'll bet the interior is just as nice. Thank you so very much for the birthday wishes.
That house is gorgeous and huge! I'll just call that second owner "Triple A". Glad to hear the family is still living there.
What a fantastic house. It would be so much fun to live there, but practical person which I am (at times) I think that the upkeep, both inside and out, would be staggering. I'd need lots of help!
What an interesting house (and history...thanks for including that). Can you imagine how long it would take to paint all that detail? Great job with this photo. It's hard to get good captures like this. You nailed it with the angle!
What a gorgeous house! Enjoyed the history too!
WOW! History, house - all captivating.
That is truly a grand old house! It looks similar to many that we have here in the older parts of town. Thanks for the history.
What a beautiful house! (I wouldn't want to paint it, though.)
