Ellis County Courthouse - Part 2

The original vault of the Ellis County Courthouse is now used as the office of the District Clerk.

The District Court courtroom is a work of art with its beautifully carved railings and judge's bench.  Note the Texas lone star above the judge's chair.  I would have loved to have gotten closer but I didn't get permission to take pictures inside the courthouse so I just snapped off a few and tried to remain as discreet as possible as I got a glimpse of this courtroom.  The next time I visit I'll have to speak with the District Clerk and try to obtain permission and take some proper photos.  The courtroom has an overhead balcony area which seats additional spectators.  I'm of the belief that this is a working courtroom.  A wider shot shows the lawyers' tables to be complete with computer hookups and other modern technical  accessories.

The vault looks a little scary; wouldn't want to be locked in there. The wood in the courtroom looks magnificent.

i would not even walk inside that vault, much less sit in a chair... i got claustrophobic thinking about it. i love the court room, it reeks of age and a time when things were so ornate and beautiful.. hope you get to go back with permission

The interior is just as ornate as the outside. I am surprised that you could get inside with a camera. I have a friend who was stopped by security for taking a picture through the window into a hallway of our courthouse. You did an excellent job on the sly.

The woodwork is gorgeous!!! Boy, I'd be afraid I'd get locked in the vault! No one would ever hear you hollering!

What a great old building -- the way a courthouse should be! Hope they keep it forever.
